There is something initially exhilarating about Kerouac's prose. He pulls off completely original, unexpected descriptions of beauty and psychology. And I understand why I was so mesmerized by this book as a teenager. But I have more respect for plot, character development, concision, and structure than I once did. And eventually it gets hard to overlook the lack of those elements here, even as some passages leave me smiling.
